These are documents that mark cultural turning points in our shared history and serve as sources of knowledge for shaping contemporary and future societies. Since 1992 the UNESCO Memory of the World programme has worked to preserve, safeguard access to and increase awareness of the importance of these extraordinary documents in archives, libraries and museums around the world.

The Memory of the World Register

Every year the International Advisory Committee recommends documents of cultural heritage which possess world significance and outstanding universal value for induction to the Memory of the World Register. These are then endorsed by the Executive Board in accordance with the respective selection criteria.
