There are 200 UNESCO national commissions worldwide. Their job is to act as a mediator between their respective national governments, civil society and UNESCO. At the same time, they cooperate with one another and carry out joint projects. In this way, they directly contribute to achieving UNESCO’s overarching goal – strengthening freedom around the world.
The German Commission collaborates with other national commissions on a variety of projects. Since its establishment, it has been an active member in the global network of UNESCO national commissions. Not only has it become a key player in partnerships at the European level, but also supports national commissions in Africa through various projects and initiatives.
It is also involved in a number of international networks affiliated with UNESCO programmes – in particular the global network of UNESCO Associated Schools, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and the UNESCO Geoparks.
Thanks to its many international partnerships, the German Commission for UNESCO has paved the way for greater multilateralism in Germany, involving a tremendous number of partners from civil society. At the same time, it directly supports UNESCO’s goal of promoting the international exchange of knowledge and experience and achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals.
