There are two hundred UNESCO National Commissions around the world, which act as intermediaries between their national governments, civil society and UNESCO. At the same time, they cooperate with each other and carry out joint projects. In this way, they contribute directly to UNESCO's overall goal of strengthening peace in the world.

The German Commission for UNESCO cooperates with other National Commissions in various formats and has been part of the worldwide network of UNESCO National Commissions since its foundation. Particular emphasis is placed on actively promoting close cooperation between the European National Commissions and supporting National Commissions in Africa through various projects and initiatives.

It is also involved in the international networks of the various UNESCO programmes - in particular in the networks of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASP), UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO Geoparks.

Through its international cooperation activities, the German Commission for UNESCO supports the Federal Republic of Germany's commitment to strong multilateralism that involves as many civil society partners as possible. At the same time, it makes a direct contribution to UNESCO's work for the international exchange of knowledge and experience and for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
