Under the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German government is committed to the national implementation of the UNESCO program "Education for Sustainable Development: Realizing the Global Sustainability Goals (ESD 2030)". Back in 2015, the BMBF established the National Platform for Education for Sustainable Development (NP ESD) with its accompanying committees. The aim is to develop and implement concrete measures to bring ESD into all areas of education. For this purpose, the National Platform adopted a German National Action Plan on ESD (NAP ESD) in 2017, which contains 130 goals and 349 concrete recommendations for action. The National Platform brings together decision-makers from politics, business, science and civil society under the chairmanship of Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. Jens Brandenburg. The chairman is assisted by a scientific advisor (Professor Dr. Gerhard de Haan) and an advisor for international issues (former Minister Walter Hirche). The National Platform is supported by six forums working on the different areas of education: Early Childhood Education, School, Higher Education, Vocational Education, Communities, Non-formal and Informal Learning. The ESD forums work closely with partner networks (PN), which connect people who are committed to education for sustainable development.
