Information Literacy

Only if people acquire the competences of a reasonable and responsible handling of new technologies, modern knowledge societies can develop. UNESCO’s Information for All Programme therefore supports the promotion of media and information literacy.

The overload of information on the internet makes clear that a responsible and capable use of the information provided is crucial. Information literacy contains the capability to find, critically evaluate, review and convey information effectively.

UNESCO wants to strengthen awareness about the fact that information literacy is an essential task in all levels of education. One focus is the capacity building for teaching staff. In its programmes on information literacy, UNESCO also particularly involves libraries.

One central component of information literacy is media literacy, which entails the critical and self-reliant use of various kinds of media, especially the internet.
