STEP in Liberia (2011-2013)

© DUK

Between 2011 and 2013, the German Commission for UNESCO, the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and the Liberian National Commission for UNESCO have jointly implemented STEP in Liberia. More than 450 students of the University of Liberia in Monrovia have successfully participated in the three rounds of STEP and learned how to start a business.

Against the background of difficult conditions in the labour market, self-employment is one important alternative in order to avoid unemployment among university graduates and create jobs at the same time. STEP does not only teach business skills but also strengthens the confidence of students by illustrating that they can become successful entrepreneurs.

The long-term evaluations of the three training rounds confirm the positive impact of STEP: In comparison to students who have not taken part in STEP, STEP-trainees start more businesses, generate more profit, and create more jobs.

The successful introduction of STEP in Liberia is due to the effort of the Liberian National Commission, the Ministry of Education, and the University of Liberia as well as the scientific support provided by Leuphana University of Lüneburg.
