Everyone has the right to education – this is a right enshrined in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Education is an essential condition for the development of a society, an important instrument in the fight against poverty and the spread of AIDS. It is a prerequisite if children are to be able to enjoy their right to a fulfilled life.
Education – the Key to Development and Peace
Educational quality is not measured by the fulfilment of attainment targets alone. For the German Commission for UNESCO, it is bound up with values such as tolerance, solidarity, empathy for others and respect for human rights – all essential for peaceful coexistence in the 21st century.
In the annual Global Monitoring Report UNESCO assesses educational progress in international comparison. UNESCO also holds the International Conference on Education.
